A Skin-care Newbie's Journey Vol.3 - Facial Hair and Skin Care

I have two adult sons and both these young men sport facial hair of varying lengths and styles. Until we started VU, I hadn't considered how skin care products might impact their lives and now I wondered:

  • Is a skin care regimen recommended or even necessary with facial hair?
  • While I get that the hair on my head needs a good regular shampooing, is that the same for facial hair?
  • Would a hair shampoo and conditioner work as well as our dedicated skin care products?

The hair on our heads catches most of the environmental irritants and completely covers our scalps while shorter length facial hairs cannot provide that protection.

To make matters worse when it comes to cleaning our hairy faces, most shampoos either strip essential moisture from the skin or do a poor job at removing the irritants that cause skin damage.

Finally, many conditioners use pore clogging ingredients that are not meant for the face. Something better is needed to clean, balance and promote healthy skin below the beard.

To understand better what this might be like, I grew a full short beard to see how my regular VU skincare regimen might protect my now furry face.

Here are my expectations going in:

  •  I am going to completely hate this experience.
    • I don't like growing facial hair beyond a day or so because I usually feel greasy and gross.
  • Our Cleansing Oil will not work as well with facial hair.
    • I have no scientific basis for this - it just feels like it won't work and will leave me feeling even greasier because it's oil on oil.
  • I am going to have to use more product because my facial hair will absorb a portion of my skin care stuff.
    • That just makes logical sense to me.

Here is what happened:

  • I am cleansing once or twice a day and my short beard feels nice.
    • My combination-oily skin doesn't feel oily at all. I am really surprised that I am not miserable.
  • The Cleansing Oil works really well.
    • It conditions my beard as well as mostly cleansing it. Having conditioning hair oils like Jojoba, Olive and Maracuja in our blend makes a big difference in conditioning my face carpet.
    • More importantly, because our oil is non-comedogenic, it will not clog pores.
  • Double cleansing especially matters.
    • I double cleanse with our Cleansing Oil followed by either our Cleansing Foam or Cleansing Gel.
    • The oil cleanses and conditions my skin and beard while the Cleansing Foam or Cleansing Gel clears out the remaining impurities that penetrate our hair follicles - it completely replaces my need to shampoo and condition while leaving my face much cleaner and ready to benefit from our serums.
  • Toning is important.
  • Serums and Treatments are more needed.
    • While facial hair is a great way to express ourselves, it also makes it harder to keep our skin clear and healthy.
    • Some of the worst environmental pollutants deeply penetrate our hair follicles and need to be neutralized by applying topical antioxidants.
    • I love our Free Radical Defense Serum because it features 18 amazing antioxidants from a variety of antioxidant families that blitz away those free radicals.
    • I also use our Ultimate C&E Serum  for nourishment and some extra antioxidant vitamin punch.
  • I am using more product overall and it doesn't bother me because my face feels great.
    • My beard is soft and nice to touch - my regimen is working really well.
    • That having been said, I'm not going to keep this thing on my face because I do not recognize me in the mirror and I don't need to travel incognito in my neighborhood - that's a celebrity problem.

What does it mean?

  • If you grow facial hair, hair shampoo and conditioner are most likely not good for cleansing, conditioning and maintaining healthy skin underneath because they are not designed to remove the environmental skin irritants from our faces - they are designed for the tops of our heads which is completely different terrain.
  • A good skin care regimen can take care of both our skin and our facial hair without requiring specialty beard cleansing products.
  • Those of us with facial hair do not have to sacrifice healthy skin beneath the beards, goatees, mustaches, mutton chop sideburns or crop circles we grow and cultivate on our faces.
Where's my razor? I'm ready to be me again.
